The article attempts to assess how China can smoothly adjust to the post-Cold War world of nation-states at the turn of the twenty-first century. It begins with an investigation of the distinctive feature of nationalism in the People's Republic of China and goes on to explore the change in the orientation of nationalism from Mao's to Deng's era. It then analyzes a dilemma that nationalist xenophobia has posed to the Chinese regime. A perspective on the implication of nationalism to Chinese foreign behavior is offered in the conclusion.
