ONCE UPON A FAIRER TIME is a collection of twelve re-imagined fairy tales presented in poetic form. Each story revisits a well-known narrative – Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, and others – offering an alternative perspective. Emphasis is given to ethical reflection, character development, and emotional nuances.

The poems vary in structure, tone, rhythm and flow, incorporating elements of rhyme, free verse, and lyrical phrasing. While maintaining recognisable settings and characters, the tales adjust key details to explore themes of justice, empathy, kindness, and personal agency. Trajectories change for a fairer outcome, often with injections of humour, irony and surprise.

Designed to appeal to both adult and younger readers, the collection balances traditional storytelling with modern sensibilities. It is suitable for individual reading or performance aloud. Author notes accompany each piece, offering context for reinterpretation and insight into the underlying moral considerations.

The book is illustrated throughout with original artwork created in parallel with the text.

HAYLEY ANN SOLOMON is a New Zealand author and poet. Her postgraduate studies were in Library and Information Science, but she has worked, for much of her life, as a writer of both mass market genre fiction and niche literary fiction. She has over twenty Regency Romance titles to her credit, all published by Kensington, New York, and has been the recipient of prizes awarded by Proverse Hong Kong. She has won, or been honoured or shortlisted for the 2023 Te Tauihu National Short Story Competition, the New Zealand Heritage Non-fiction Awards, the Postcards from the Rangitikei Series, the Momaya Press Annual Reviews, The Cinnamon Press Sonnet Competition, the Annual Proverse Poetry Prize Anthologies, and the Page and Blackmore Short Story Awards. A Romantic Times nominee for most innovative regency romance, she was a University Of Maine, at Machias Honoree. Her novels include young adult fantasy and historical romance. Celestial Promise, her poetry collection, arcs with the moon, rising and falling in cadence, waxing and waning in the lyrical, the laughter, the sombre and the darkly philosophical, until regeneration. Hayley is a classical singer. She loves music, coffee, kindness, colour, collecting beads all the brilliance of the rainbow.
