The Art Museum, Institute of Chinese Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has benefited greatly from the Bei Shan Tang in establishing a comprehensive collection, which forms the basis for its academic researches. Almost half of the Art Museum collection comes from the Bei Shan Tang gifts. Bei Shan Tang was the private studio name of the late Dr. LEE Jung Sen (1915-2007), a life member of the University Council, the founder and major benefactor of the Art Museum. Dr. Lee served as the Chairman of the Art Museum Management Committee since the inception of the Art Museum in 1971until 2004, lending his vision and guidance to every stage of its development. This catalogue is published to accompany the large scale tribute exhibition "Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Gifts of Chinese Art" organized by the Art Museum, introducing the creams of the Bei Shan Tang gifts to the Museum over the years. It is prefaced with a retrospective essay in memory of Dr. J. S. Lee by Peter Y. K. Lam, Director of the Art Museum. The 113 selected gifts of Chinese art are sorted by categories: epigraphy, rubbings, calligraphy, painting, bronze and jade, ceramics, and others; with detailed descriptions in Chinese and English, and illustrated in colour plates.
