This collection brings together the small but profound corpus of short stories by Xubin in English translation. With a background in ecology, Xubin came as a breath of fresh air on the Hong Kong literary scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Her meticulous depiction of the mother nature and its fauna and flora, as well as her precise, fable-like language and vivid imagery, all contribute to a unique reflectiveness in her writings.

Xubin (pen name of Ng Yuk Ying), born in Hong Kong, received her master’s degree in ecology from San Diego State University. She was one of the first to introduce Latin-American writers to Hong Kong readers through her translations published in local literary magazines. In addition to her short stories, her literary works also include the essay collection Kan niu ji 看牛集 [Watching cows] (1991) and a Chinese translation (1971) of Jean-Paul Sartre’s La nausée.
