China was a decidedly under-urbanized country prior to its opening up to the world in 1978. Since then, urbanization and the growth of cities has been part and parcel of the country's economic and social transformation. The number of cities mushroomed from 191 in 1978 to 661 in 2004, and the urban population has more than doubled since 1978, reaching a total of 542.83 million in 2004. This paper attempts to provide an up-to-date review of China's urban population, with an accent on its characteristics, problems, and opportunities. The regional integration, as a policy instrument to effect orderly change and promote growth and competitiveness across regions and cities will be discussed. Both issues are examined against the background of globalization, which is likely to still be with us in the years ahead.
