This book marks Hong Kong's transfer of sovereignty from Britain to China by celebrating Hong Kong as it is today. It is not concerned with politics but focuses on the environment and lifestyles of Hong Kong instead. One thousand people, from all walks of life, have been asked what Hong Kong means to them. Some were born and bred here, some came to work, some simply visited, some have now moved away. All have contributed their thoughts and memories. The book interprets these thoughts and memories, mainly in over 400 photographs which capture various aspects of Hong Kong life, and also in text, calligraphy and paintings. The book is an historical, if impressionistic and subjective, record of Hong Kong today and the images it presents are images which Hong Kong people recognise and with which they identify.

Tim Nutt conceived the book, developed the idea with his friend Chris Bale and directed the photography. He has lived in Hong Kong for twenty years, working as an architect, and through photography has become fascinated by the visual richness of local life.

Chris Bale, former television news presenter and interviewer. He spoke to ten Hong Kong people, gaining contrasting perspectives on Hong Kong, past and present.
