David Hawkes is one of the great scholars and translators of our age. He studied Classics and Chinese at Oxford and Peking Universities. He was Professor of Chinese at Oxford from 1958 until 1971. He has translated the early poetic anthology The Songs of the South (a revised edition was published by Penguin (Classics), and has written a study of the poetry of Du Fu (A Little Primer of Tu Fu). Undoubtedly his greatest achievement is his masterly translation of the first eighty chapters of the great eighteenth-century novel The Story of the Stone, by Cao Xueqin and Gao E. This is considered by many critics to have been one of the first truly successful translations of traditional Chinese fiction, at the same time scholarly and highly readable. He and his wife Jean spent several years in retirement on a Welsh hill-farm, and now live in Oxford.

作者為英國劍橋大學博士,曾任教於美國三一神學院二十餘年,並擔任ESV聖經翻譯監督委員會之一。
