The first of its kind to address the political, cultural and pedagogical issues of English in the age of globalization, this book not only presents valuable information about the English language in Hong Kong and China, it also treats theoretical concepts related to language and globalization and opens new perspectives on these issues. The fifteen papers that make up this collection represent pioneering work in examining how language functions as a mediating agent in global cultural formation, and vice versa, particularly in the new order of media and information that connects Hong Kong and China to the rest of the world.

Kwok-kan Tam received his Ph.D. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1984. He has been Professor at the Department of English of The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1996. His areas of research include globalization and postcolonial studies, language and subjectivity, comparative literature and culture, drama, and psychoanalysis.

Timothy Weiss, also Professor at the Department of English of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, graduated from University of New Mexico in 1981 with a doctoral degree. Recently he has focused his research on postcolonial literature, world literature in English, and comparative literature.
