As one of China's strategic coastal provinces, Fujian has traditionally played a vital role in the economic development and diplomacy of the country. Overseas Chinese, the Taiwan factor and the designation of Fujian as the first open area, along with Guangdong, have vastly accelerated development and modernization since 1978. This book has adopted the twin sub-themes of transition and transformation in describing, documenting and analyzing the breath-taking changes in the province over the past two decades. It is a major contribution to the subject of economic change and social transformation in China.

Y. M. Yeung is Professor of Geography, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and Head of Shaw College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His wide-ranging research interests have recently focused on China's coastal cities, South China, globalization and Asian cities. He has published extensively and his recent works include: Shanghai (1996) and Guangdong (1998), also published by The Chinese University Press.

David K. Y. Chu obtained his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and was formerly Professor in the Department of Geography, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has published many articles and book chapters on the port of Hong Kong and China's special economic zones.
