During the eight years of systematic study of the macrofungi in Guangdong province, the authors had carried out more than 7,500 collections from fifty localities in twelve municipalities, and identified 1,058 species which are under 239 genera, 56 families, 20 orders and 4 classes of Basidiomycotina and Ascomycotina. Among them, there are 58 new species and varieties, 19 new combinations, and 466 species and 46 genera are discovered in this region for the first time. The study established that there are 185 edible species, 97 medicinal species and numerous species which cause natural timber rot; the extomycarrhizal fungi, which are of great significance in afforestation, also amount to a larger number.

The system of classification employed in this study essentially follows that of Ainsworth et al. (1973) which has been generally recognized and adopted by contemporary mycologists, although some changes have been introduced where they are thought necessary in the light of the emended system of Kühner (1980) and the opinions of some other mycologists. The genera and species are identified on the basis of their macro- and micro-characters and of the chemical characters when treated with certain reagents.

Bi Zhishu is a research fellow and professor of the Guangdong Institute of Microbiology. He began his work on mycology at the Institut Nationale Agronomique de Paris in 1951, majoring in plant pathology and taxonomy of mycology under the guidance of Professor G. Viennot-Bourgin. He and his colleagues have been awarded six Prizes for Science and Technology Progress sponsored by the Academia Sinica and the Academy of Sciences of Guangdong Province respectively. He is the author or co-author of twelve works, including Illustrations of Fruit Diseases and Pests in China, Plant Nematology. Cultivation of Chinese Edible Fungi, Macrofungus Flora of the Mountainous District of North Guangdong. Modern Biology, Animal Parasitic Phenomena, Resources of Macrofungi in the Mountainous Area of Guangdong and Flora of Chinese Edible Fungi. In addition, he has published more than 30 articles on mycology.

Zheng Guoyang graduated from the Teachers’ College of South China in 1960 and is now an associate research fellow and associate professor of the Guangdong Institute of Microbiology. He has published 10 articles on mycology.

Li Taihui is an associate research fellow and associate professor of the Guangdong Institute of Microbiology. He graduated from the Institute with a master’s degree in 1988 and has been working on the taxonomy of mycology under the guidance of Professor Bi Zhishu. He has published many articles on mycology.
